How to choose your domain name registrar for absolute dummies

Your domain name is your web site identity. This web site domain name is TGWA.TV therefore, every time you want to read an article or to watch on of my videos posted here, you simply visit this same name using your Internet browser.

Domain names are unique, and no two web sites can share the same top level domain name “TLD”. A top level domain name is always on the following format:
Some Name.Extension

And it can not be on the following format:
Something.Some Name.Extension
In this last example (Something) is called “Sub-Domain”, and (Some Name) is called “TLD”.

The company you buy your domain name from is called Domain Name Registrar. There is a list of every authorized domain name registrar in the world and every company selling domains outside that list is simply reselling their services.

However, the more accurate term is leasing/renting a domain name, not buying a domain name. As you already know, when you are in the market for a new home, you either rent or buy your home. With domain name you can only rent. No one owns their domain. And the maximum lease is 10 years. Therefore you can rent (lets call it register from now on) your domain for 1:10 years and you can renew indefinitely as long as you pay the renewal fee every year before the domain expiration date.

Your domain name can include only English letters A-Z and English numbers number 0-9 and the dash symbol –
It can not include two consecutive dashes — and can include maximum of 63 characters.
